That knowing grin

Gwendolyn Piper Steeves:
Baby Book—Now I Get It!

Now I can... Date Notes
Recognize my name 29 Apr 06, give or take a few days Right around this time, we started noticing that Gwen definitely turned to look at us when we said her name!
Understand what "no" means 3 Jun 06 Gwen definitely knows what "no" means. She does a pretty good job of stopping whatever we ask (pinching, removing her hat, etc.), but she is also just starting to test us by looking at us carefully and starting up the no–no again. Scamp.
Point to things I want 6 Aug 06 For about a month now, Gwen has been making a "V" sign with her fingers, which led to much speculation as to its meaning: Victory? Peace? Something more aggressively vulgar? It has become apparent, though, that she was just learning how to point. Somewhere over the last few days, she began using her index finger to gesture at things, where weeks earlier, the "V" would have been used. The most obvious example is Gwen pointing to the ceiling fan and exclaiming "Ceil!"
Follow directions 17 Jul 06 For about a month now, Gwen has started to show more and more signs of understanding. She will clap her hands, give us things when we ask (sometimes), come to us, and more—everyday she seems to have learned a dozen more words and ideas.

Update—January 2007: Gwen can do anything we ask now, as long as she is game.

Understand what opposites mean October 2006 Adorable, adorable: Thanks to a song called "Very, very tall," Gwen not only knows what tall and small are, but also reaches her hands way up and exclaims "Tall!" at the right time during the song.

Update—January 2007: Gwen now also knows up/down, open/shut, and on/off.

Know the parts of the body Fall 2006 As Gwen's vocabulary growth has been a racing locomotive lately, it is hard to keep up with what words she knows. She can definitely identify eyes, nose, teeth, chin, mouth, tongue, ears, head, face, belly, belly button, fingers, hands, toes, feet, and hair.
Know my colors 6 June 07 Gwen can say and sign all of her colors and sometimes correctly names them on her toys.
Know the alphabet January 2007 Whenever Gwen sees letters, she starts to say "BCBC," her version of the ABC's.

Update (5 Mar 07): Thanks to Signing Time!, Gwen can say all of her ABC's as Mommy signs them.

Count to ten 5 Mar 07 Getting close! Gwen can repeat all ten numbers with us, and she will occasionally spout off a few on her own (5, 6, 7...). She is not yet counting to ten on demand, but it will happen very soon...

Update (6 June 07): Gwen can easily count to ten (and sign the numbers). She is also getting quite good at counting objects in pictures.

Recognize shapes Fall 2006 Gwen can say and recognize star, circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, crescent, hexagon, and heart.
Read Holidays 2007 By the close of 2007, Gwen was able to read about a dozen words, including dog, act, movie, Gwen, cow, baby, mom, and dad. She can spell several words without help, including cat, dog, bus, and mom. She can also, if asked, identify verbally spelled out words; that is, if I ask her what b–a–b–y spells, she answers "baby."
