| Gurgle and coo |
17 Oct 05, give or take a day |
4 weeks—Right on time—Gwen is starting to express herself in some
ways other than crying, and loves it when we imitate her sounds |
| Babble
|
15 Nov 05 |
At the same time Gwen started laughing, she also really babbled for the
first time, demanding my attention and most certainly getting it |
| Say mama and dada |
8 Aug 06
|
This is controversial, but I am going to claim that yes, Gwen says Mama and Dada. It is potentially debatable because she has so many other words (duck, dog, woof, moo, bubble, ceiling fan) that are unmistakable, whereas Mama and Dada are less precise. However, she absolutely knows what Mama and Dada mean, and can even grab Mommy's nose on command, and makes the Mama and Dada sounds in our general directions—so I count it! |
| Say "no" |
August 06
|
According to many parenting books, a good rule is to limit the number of "no's" you direct at your child. So instead, I found myself saying "Stop!" to Gwen when she was doing something she should not (pinching being the main offense). Of course, she just started saying "Stop!" rather than "No!" Smart baby.
Update (5 Mar 07): Gwen says "NO!" now. With gusto. And in sign language, for emphasis. |
| Put two words together |
12 Jan 07
|
We had suspected Gwen was starting to link words, but today I was certain thanks to her distinct demand, "Want down!" after she finished lunch in her high chair.
Update (6 Jun 07): Gwen is saying lots of word combinations now, especially showing ownership (Mommy nose, Daddy train, etc). We are sure that "Mine!" is coming soon. |
| Ask "why"? |
|
|
| Speak in sentences |
Fall 2007
|
Gwen says lots of two– and three–word sentences, like "Go see Daddy!" and "Park fun!" and "Pink bear hungry!" She is also starting to use personal pronouns, like "Comb my hair!" and "I see it!" |
| Say "I love you" |
Fall 2006
|
Gwen does not say these words yet, but she understands them. She gives big hugs and says "Awwwww!" when her Dad and I say we love her. Sweet baby.
Update (6 June 07): Gwen says and signs "I love you" both on demand and spontaneously. |
| Signing |
6 June 07
|
Gwen started signing around Christmas of 2006. She can now sign about 250 or 300 words, the alphabet, and numbers 1 thru 10. |
